Ryan is a graduate of the Rutgers School of Law-Newark and licensed to practice law in Idaho and federal courts, including federal bankruptcy court. Ryan attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and studied journalism, but left to begin his career prior to earning his degree. He worked as a sports writer at the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello, a copy editor/page designer at the Daily Herald in Provo, Utah, and the Times-Tribune in Scranton, Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania, Ryan began investing in real estate by purchasing, renovating, and selling several properties. Seeing that the real estate market was headed for a decline, Ryan shifted his focus to acquiring multi-unit residential rental properties, some of which he still owns.
After five years in the newspaper business, Ryan returned to school to complete a Bachelor’s of Science in Business, with a minor in Accounting at Keystone College in Pennsylvania. He then attended Rutgers for law school. During law school he worked part-time for a tax attorney and later an employment attorney. He also participated in his school’s Urban Legal Clinic as a third-year student. Ryan was able to provide service to low-income clients in cases including family law, unemployment compensation, consumer debt, and landlord-tenant law.
